These include: purely academic institutions (which focus on soliciting their own alumni), donor-advised funds (which are not operating charities but a holding envelope for money that will eventually go to an operating charity), and the many religious entities that don’t make public financial information (not much we can do there). Our list is geared toward charities that appeal to the general public, so we don’t evaluate certain categories of nonprofits. All receipts other than private donations and government support are included in other revenue and total revenue, which we list for each charity. Thus, we don’t count as a private donation membership dues, figuring that the donor/member is getting something tangible back, for example, reduced admission fees for a museum. Gifts can be cash, stock, goods and even labor or services if the charity chooses to include their value in their statements (many don’t).Īs we see it, a contribution should be based on charitable intent, with the donor receiving nothing back beyond the pleasure of supporting a cause deemed worthwhile. But we exclude government grants (which are public rather than private), revenue from sales or services (not a gift but simply transactions), and investment returns. These gifts can come from individuals, their estates, corporations, federated campaigns and even other nonprofits. While we present a lot of information, the defining metric for our list is the total amount of private donations received in that latest fiscal year. A few report very slowly, forcing us to include a fiscal year as far back as ending in 2017. So we have results for some fiscal periods ending in 2020. Some charities turn around their results rather quickly. The data covers a charity’s latest available fiscal year, generally ending in 2019. Information we compile comes from the charities themselves in the form of IRS Form 990 filings, audited financial statements, annual reports or Forbes survey forms that charities fill out and return.
